The Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester United’s left-back situation is set to improve, with two key players approaching their return from extended injury absences.
Luke Shaw, sidelined since February due to a calf issue, and Tyrell Malacia, out since May 2023 with a knee injury, are both nearing fitness. Shaw’s absence has been particularly impactful, given his crucial role in both defense and attack. His unavailability forced manager Erik ten Hag to use Diogo Dalot out of position, affecting the team’s tactical setup.
The imminent return of these defenders is timely as United faces a critical period in their schedule. Shaw is anticipated to be match-ready after the international break, potentially featuring in the Brentford game. While Ten Hag remains cautious about confirming Shaw’s availability for the upcoming weekend, he’s optimistic about a quick comeback. Malacia is also progressing well in training, with expectations of regaining match fitness in the coming weeks.
United’s injury concerns extend beyond the left-back position. Harry Maguire is expected to be absent for a few weeks due to a foot injury sustained against Aston Villa. Leny Yoro and Mason Mount are still recovering from more serious injuries. On a positive note, Alejandro Garnacho, who withdrew from Argentina’s national team due to a minor knee problem, is likely to be fit for the upcoming Brentford match.
